Gallery dedicated to the works of Gustave Courbet: b. 1819 d. 1877. French painter master of realism. Courbet lived through troubled times in France, and became involved in politics. Sent to prison for his part in the destruction of a Napoleon monument, while imprisioned he painted flowers and fruits brought to him by his sister. Courbet painted only what he could see, once asked to paint any angel he replied " sorry but I have never seen an angel ".
