Description
Original 1908 oil on canvas painting by William Keith: b. 1838 d. 1911. Hetch Hetchy Valley located in a corner of Yosemite Valley National Park. The name Hetch Hetchy comes from an edible grass seed in the Native American Miwok language, which grew on the valley floor before being flooded by water. In 1913 by an act of the United States Congress a bill was passed to construct a dam on the Tuolumne River in the Hetch Hetchy valley, with the designed purpose to supply water and electrical power to the city of San Francisco California. A national debate concerning the dam and reservoir raged over the issue, and until today continues with many factions wanting the valley restored to its natural beauty, and as John Muir said " the mountains can be glad again ".
